120 penguin boxes are now in place at Cape Kidnappers Wildlife Preserve.

Thanks to the efforts of local volunteers, around 120 penguin boxes are now in place at Cape Kidnappers Wildlife Preserve. Around 40 volunteers dug holes to install the boxes in the Ocean Beach dune system in the winter of 2006 ready for the birds to take residence.

Little Blue Penguins prospect for nest sites in July and August each year prefering rock crevaces and burrows. They have peak laying times in August and November, with young ones fledging towards the end of November through to January.

The boxes provide additional nesting habitat for Little Blue Penguins along the Cape Kidnappers coastline. An ongoing monitoring program is in place to keep a check on the boxes and to track breeding numbers.
